Intercept® Poverty Service Projects
Project # 1 Kidane Meheret Children's Home
Kidane Meheret Children's Home in Addis Ababa Ethiopia is an orphanage run by the Franciscan Sisters. It is the home and school for up to 180 children from day old babies through to young adults in their mid-teens.

At Kidane, they like to implement in the heart of the children love for work and helping others. The children that can, help everyday with the house chores.

From a community perspective, Kidane have forty people working with them, many of whom are single parents. They help these mothers so that they can continue to care for their own children. Besides their salaries they have free meals and many of them have a child sponsored.
Milk Powder for Babies Program
Kidane Meheret Children's Home is self funded and relies totally on the local resources that the Franciscan Sisters can access, plus generous donations that they receive from all around the world. However, there is always a shortfall and the most pressing need we have personally observed in our times there is a regular and reliable supply of baby formula for the 30-odd babies who rely on this for quality of life.

We have done significant local research on how to resolve this. Sending over tins of formula is NOT the way, the postage is expensive and it probably won't make it to the destination anyway, as the postal system is not reliable in Ethiopia. However, there is a reliable local supply of tinned formula available in Addis Ababa and we have a trusted person on the ground there who will buy it and take it to Kidane by the time it is needed. We simply do an international transfer of the cash to Kidane's bank account. All we need is the money to transfer!

Our Intercept® Milk Powder for Babies plan is simple. Businesses, our clients, individual people, community groups, schools, etc contribute to a central Intercept® Poverty pool that coordinates the transfer of cash to Kidane, as and when it is needed. And 100% of every contribution will be sent to Kidane - we will not be charging any administration fees.
Project # 2 Angels Children's Home
Monica Tonna Barthet, a 70 year old Maltese woman, has built a home for sick street boys in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with the help of Kebena Kidane Meheret Church. She used her life savings to do so and now relies on donations to keep the home going.

The Angels Children's Home provides the daily needs of food, a good quality dormitory and counselling. It can accomodate up to 20 boys aged between 7 and 15. These boys attend local schools and receive private medical attention when required.

There are several ways to help these boys inlcuding your generous donations.
Projecy # 3 Addis Birhan Youth at Risk Program
Addis Birhan means 'New Light'. This particular program is congruent with our philosophy of empowerment and root cause problem solving. It is also synergistic with the Insights shared in our Intercept® Programs.

The Mission of the Addis Birhan Programme is "to work to build the self confidence of young people in Ethiopia by accompanying them in acquiring knowledge, skills and understanding of themselves and their society. The Fruits of this self-confidence will be the ability of young people to protect themselves from various diseases especially HIV/AIDS, the capacity to change themselves and others and to become empowered to use their full personal potential."

Who is this program for? This program is prepared for school going youth in the age range 11-18 years and provides ideas for youth in key aspects of their daily life.

There are five key components:-
1. Personal Development: This part allows students to learn about their personal growth and to practice life skills.
2. Sexuality Education: Anatomy, physiology, fertility and parenthood, values and responsibility, abortion, STI's, contraception.
3. Value Choices and Formation: Values - where do they come from etc?
4. Gender: Gender in culture, society, law, economy, media, gender roles.
5. HIV/AIDS: Education and understanding of HIV/AIDS that "breaks the silence" and encourages young people to actively assist those affected and infected by HIV/AIDS

The Addis Birhan Youth HIV/AIDS Education Program has been successfully piloted now in both private and public school contexts within a variety of religious as well as non-religious schools for the past 2 years.
Project # 4 English Conversation in Ethiopia
We have have established relationship with 4 schools in Addis Ababa that all require the opportunities to converse and practice english. These schools have 6,000 students.

This our newest initiative and partnership and promises to offer Intercept® Poverty a wonderful experience of adding value in Ethiopia as well as having an exceptional cultural exchange.

The aim of this program is to share in the 'Art of English Conversation'.

From our newest Intercept® Poverty partner and Director of the 4 Schools in Addis Ababa: "we had a very nice discussion about your Intercept® Program and our schools in Ethiopia. I am very impressed by your vision and mission to elevate the lives of the poor, which I am fully behind you. We, have four schools in Ethiopia. We teach from grade 1-12. We have 1500 students in each of our schools. Our students would like to learn and speak the English language. We cannot get voulnteers who can teach our kids English Conversation. Therefore, we kindly ask you and your organization to send us volunteers who could teach English so that our students will improve their speaking skills and give them good basics. We would like to have volunteers who can speak good English, who are ready to serve our students with full zeal."
